NetStorm is one of the few multiplayer strategy games, hence the name. It has a campaign that introduces you to the game, but strategically it's very different from multiplayer. For these reasons, Activision, the game's publisher, has created a large multiplayer server where players can connect and fight with each other. The main problem with the game was security issues; when the game was released, it was easy to download it illegally. Due to this and probably bad marketing, not many people bought this game.

However, it is an unconventional real-time strategy in which you control the elements water, wind, lightning and the sun. NetStorm combines chess with real-time strategy. The game takes place on islands floating in the air. You connect these islands with cubes not unlike those from Tetris. In the game you build various defensive and combat structures that have a limited range and different methods of attack. The only two types of units you can move with are priests and golems. The priest controls and builds everything. The golem derives energy from geysers. The aim of the game is to capture and sacrifice a priest of a foreign element.
