Silent Service II od MicroProse je simulátor ponorkovej vojny v oblati Pacifiku v období 1941-1945. Počiatky simulátore siahajú až do nádherného osembitového praveku Atari a Sinclair. Potom sa objavil remake pre PC a nakoniec jeho zdokonalená verzia SS-II, ktorú teraz máte pred sebou.
V tejto hre sa teda stávate kapitánom americkej ponorky. Vašou úlohou je vyplávať do boja, potápať japonské lode a zostať pri tom nažive, aby ste nabudúce mohli potopiť ďalšie. V boji je nutné brať do úvahy špecifické vlastnosti tohto druhu plavidla. Ponorky bojujú skryto, musíte nájsť vhodný cieľ a potom sa okolo neho opatrne plížiť a odhadovať situáciu. Ako blízko sa môžete priblížiť, z akého uhla odpáliť torpédo, ktorým smerom potom unikať. Musíte myslieť na rýchlosť konvoja, silu eskorty, viditeľnosť, hĺbku pod kýlom, všetky možnosti svoje ponorky. Jednou z hlavných zbraní ponorkových kapitánov je - trpezlivosť.

Hrať sa dá niekoľkými spôsobmi. Nejjednosušší je skúsiť jednu izolovanú bitku, kedy sa vaša ponorka ocitá na dohľad od japonského flotily. Môžete si vybrať akciu podľa skutočnej historickej udalosti, alebo náhodne generovanú. Bitka sa skončí po nepriateľské lode potopené (alebo ste potopená vy), alebo ak stratíte kontakt s nepriateľom. Možno tiež vyplávať na jednu izolovanú bojovú plavbu, pri ktorej hliadkujú v danej oblasti a sami si vyhľadávate vhodné ciele. Alebo môžete prejsť celú vojnu od Pearl Harboru až do japonskej kapitulácie.

Hra je urobená celkom v súlade s históriou, a tak sa tu stretávame len s takými typmi a vlastnosťami ponoriek, ktoré v danej dobe skutočne existovali. Rešpektuje napríklad aj vleklé problémy Američanov s chybnými torpédami - je to k hnevu, keď trafíte lietadlovú loď a torpédo neexploduje ...

Grafika i zvuk sú z dnešného pohľadu samozrejme nedokonalé, však aj hra pochádza z roku 1990. Vo svojej dobe ale prakticky neexistovalo nič lepšie. Veľa som si s tým vyhral, ​​a ešte aj dnes sa k SS2 občas vraciam, keď potrebujem zabiť pol hodiny. Skúste to tiež a ak nie ste beznádejnej suchozemské krysy, bude sa páčiť aj vám.
