Game review

Super Hang-On, a sequel to the popular Hang-On, is a motorcycle racing arcade game released by Sega. It features a simulated motorcycle arcade cabinet, similar to its predecessor. The game was so well-received that an updated version, named Limited Edition Hang-On, was released in arcades in 1991.

The gameplay of Super Hang-On offers an experience akin to the original Hang-On but with enhanced features. Players can choose from four tracks, each representing a different continent and composed of a varying number of stages. The game introduces a turbo function once the player reaches a speed of 280 km/h, allowing the motorcycle to accelerate up to a top speed of 324 km/h. This mechanic adds a layer of strategy to the races.

Each continent presents its own challenge: Africa, with six stages, is the easiest and shortest; Asia has ten stages, echoing the length of the original Hang-On course; the Americas, comprising 14 stages, ramps up the difficulty; and Europe, the most challenging, stretches over 18 stages. Adding to the immersive experience, players can select one of four songs to accompany their race, a feature inspired by another Sega classic, Out Run.

The Sega Mega Drive version expanded on the arcade experience. It included the full arcade game and an additional "original mode," where players could attract sponsors, earn money, and upgrade their bike's components. This version's cover art paid homage to motorbike racing, featuring colors and designs reminiscent of Shinichi Itoh’s racing attire, who competed in the All-Japan 500 cc Championship on a Rothmans Honda NSR500. This added depth and realism to the game, resonating with motorbike racing enthusiasts.

Super Hang-On, with its engaging gameplay, strategic racing elements, and diverse courses, established itself as a memorable and influential title in the world of arcade racing games.
